As the new intake of NHJ Style Academy students were getting stuck into their practical shopping training day in Central London, I remembered my own training with NHJ Style back in 2013. Fast forward 6 years to the present day where I was now busy getting ready to host two fashion shows in one day for Elys of Wimbledon department store.

The Elys Edit Autumn Winter 2019 took weeks of preparation as I styled outfits for 7 models across womenswear and menswear in a new season edit to inspire customers’ autumn wardrobes with a fabulous fashion event in store.

When the day arrived we started with a brief run through so the models were familiar with the catwalk and format, followed by fittings with me to check all the outfits worked and the clothes fit.

Next it was hair and makeup time for the models and moment for me to check through my presenting notes, make a few changes and get ready myself in a Reiss velvet tuxedo jacket and high waisted trousers worn with a White Company lace trim camisole beneath. I usually wear a lot of colour and print while styling but as I was presenting and the focus was on the outfits on the runway, I kept it simple yet stylish in black with sparkly heels to finish.

The show

I styled 35 looks for women and men, featuring some of the key trends for the season to showcase the great range of brands available at Elys of Wimbledon Department Store.

The show started with The New Neutrals; tonal outfits of cream, chocolate and caramel with texture playing a big part in the looks. I also featured animal prints, and although many of us wear leopard print with ease, I styled this season’s brighter prints in zebra and tiger stripes as well as different ways to wear leopard.

The suit is a key trend for AW19 so I showed 4 different ways to wear tailoring for every shape in both smart and casual forms. I ensured there were plenty of great winter coats - and not in black or navy! - as well as midi dresses paired with long boots and finished off the show with sparkling party wear.

Using my menswear styling knowledge from Men’s Style Academy and experience built up since, I put together multiple outfits for our 3 male models with practical and functional, yet stylish pieces including Belstaff jackets, Eton shirts and Folk knitwear.

Boss blazers and coats are a must for men this season when it comes to giving a smarter edge to their wardrobe and I included a healthy dose of checks and a hint of print clashing for a fashionable edge.

The fashion shows shared these top trends styled with great brands but that’s not all, as I shared my top style tips during the shows to provide even more for the guests than just a look at new season stylish outfits for guests.

NHJ STYLE ACADEMY GRADUATE ON WORK EXPERIENCE

I was assisted by fellow stylist, Helen, a graduate from the NHJ Style Academy personal styling course in March. Helen worked backstage during the show checking the models’ outfits before they took to the runway and ensured smooth changes with a team of dressers behind the scenes.

NICKY HAMBLETON-JONES AND THE NHJ STYLE TEAM

NHJ Style’s Claire and Nicky came along to the show and sat on the FROW and caught up with 2019 NHJ Style Academy graduate Helen and NHJ Stylist Alice (a 2018 graduate) who had clients booked throughout the day in the Personal Styling Suite.

It was another successful corporate event for NHJ Style and I loved being part of it. Looking forward to next season’s The Elys Edit already!
