Layer Up In Style This Winter
Make your wardrobe go the distance with our top layering tips for your favourite basics so you can stay stylishly warm this winter!
Chunky knit cardie
If you love your comfort treats, then a chunky cardie is a must-have for you. Always remember to layer soft feminine fabrics underneath such as a silk or chiffon blouse. This will not only help to reduce the bulkiness but will also create an interesting mix of textures that is bang on trend.
When it comes to chunky knits the main rule of thumb is to avoid bright brash colours. Muted soft shades of greys, caramels and creams are tonally more flattering against the skin and less likely to cause the illusion of added extra inches. Likewise steer clear of black, as satisfying as it may feel to be concealed in the solid block of colour, when it comes to thick knits it will make any frame look twice as big.
And remember, the chunkier the knit - the more added bulk, so avoid if you're broad shouldered and top heavy.
Waterfall cardigans
The cardigan has moved on from the twin set and pearls. Long or short in length, the waterfall cardigan cascades down the front of the body creating flattering ruffles and tiers that help to disguise any lumps and bumps. The beauty of the waterfall is that it can be draped in various ways to change your look. If pear shaped, wear a waisted belt over cardigan with boot-leg trousers and fitted top. For apple shapes, drape cardigan across the body and secure with statement broach on opposite shoulder to divert eye away from tummy area. If tall then a long knee length cardigan will be best suited, but if petite in height opt for a hip length version.
Printed chiffon dress
Layer up your soft chiffon dresses over opaque tights and soft jersey tops and ankle boots or pumps to carry you through the winter months. A common mistake is to always layer up over pretty tops and dresses which can destroy the line and shape of an outfit. Instead try layering under with long sleeve fine knitted jumpers in a complementary colour that will help to create the illusion of length and slimness in the body - ideal for pear shaped figures. For those who want to create a more defined waist, layer under tailored jackets and belt together with a waist cyncher for maximum effect.
The shirt dress
The ideal way to carry your shirt dress through winter is to layer over a polar neck for added warmth and team with thick tights, leggings and over the knee boots. Beware, that polo necks can make top heavy frames look wide and heavy set and in many cases accentuate double chins. Opt instead for a fine jersey knit with a round or v-neck and layer up with beads for added interest. Be careful of layering over black as it will drain all the colour from your face, choose a fun contrasting colour instead for a more fashion forward look.
