This is the must-have guide to this season's glam coats. It's the most expensive purchase you're likely to make this season, so here are our top tips to ensure you get it right for your body shape.
Macs: The perfect between season cover-up. Forever stylish, and sophisticated the Mac has come a long way. Perfect for pear or hour glass shapes that really want to show off their waist. Or if you're full chested, wear open and tie belt round the back to create shape whilst elongating figure at the same time. Do invest in a bold colour for real impact! Bold checks, or tweeds are a great way to make a statement and disguise lumps and bumps.
Duffle: The Duffle coat is an ideal weekend option and will suit most body shapes depending on the size of your chest. If you're pear shaped, opt for a cropped version or one that's nipped in at the waist. Avoid if you're large chested or broad shouldered as the tie-button detailing will make you look boxy. If you're tall and skinny, longer line coats with patterns or checks will add bulk and fill out proportions.
Parka: The Parka is easy to wear for most body shapes and ideal for the UK climate - but choose one that isn't just plain black for a point of difference. To really look the business, opt for one in a metallic finish - to give it a more glamorous finish - which will mean it's more versatile day and night.
Always choose one that's got shape in the waist, either with gathered detailing on the sides, suitable for apple shapes or belted suitable for pear and hourglass shapes. This will make it more chic than sloppy.
Ladylike coat: Another classic coat shape that's ideal for disguising lumps and bumps. Given the way that this double breasted style is tailored to fit around the bust and then flares out, skimming over the tummy before ending conveniently mid thigh makes it perfect to wear with any length skirt or trousers.
If you're bottom heavy, opt for one with large buttons and distractive detailing towards the top of the coat, to draw the eye upwards. If you're large chested, opt for long clean lines devoid of detailing but fitted in the waist and wear open to create length and slim proportions.
Fur: Whether you approve of the real deal or the faux option - there's nothing quite as glamorous as a Fur coat. Fur tends to add bulk, so choose a simple single breasted coat with plunging v-neckline for large chested ladies. If you're looking to disguise a stomach, choose your coat by the pattern. One with vertical detailing will help disguise a rounded tum. If you're curvy in the hip department opt for a ¾ length coat with contrast collar and button detailing to draw your eye upwards. If you're lucky enough to be tall and slim, this is the perfect coat for you as it will add volume in all the right places. Only to be avoided if you're broad shouldered.
Military: Stand to attention in this season's must have military coat. The perfectly tailored military coat is a flattering shape for all. Ornate or simple, the clean vertical panels and line seams of this style coat create a long and lean silhouette on any height or size woman. No matter whether you opt for a belted or plain fitted version, funnel neck or small fold down collar, always bear in mind double breasted is best for smaller chests whilst single is best for large. Brass buttons may look decorative but will create the illusion of extra width on larger frames so preferably choose dark ones to match coat. Look out for added volume in the skirt for tall slim shapes.
